How To Have Healthy Skin This Winter

Winter is right around the corner!

This means cold, dry air with a chance of snow. These changes in the weather can sometimes wreak havoc on our skin.

How can you make sure your skin stays healthy and glowing?

Talk To A Specialist About Skin Concerns

Don’t rely solely on your friends and family or even the folks at your local drugstore to point you in the right direction when it comes to your skincare needs! Going to an esthetician or dermatologist is a great suggestion for anyone who has skin concerns – regardless of the season.

Wear Comfortable & Appropriate Clothing

Some fabrics, such as wool or other rough materials can irritate your skin. This can increase discomfort and itchiness. Try wearing breathable materials under these heavier articles of clothing. Also, make sure to wear gloves to protect your hands when the air is cold .

Lower Your Thermostat

Resist the urge to crank up the heat indoors (even though we’re all guilty of it) when you come inside from the cold. The warmer your home is inside, the drier the air will be. Experts have found that the ideal indoor temperature to help maintain healthy skin is between 68-72 degrees.

Get A Humidifier

This is a very simple way to add moisture to the dry rooms inside your house. If you’re experiencing dry skin in the mornings, try placing a humidifier in your bedroom.

Eat Right & Stay Hydrated

This is especially tricky during the busy holiday season that we’re quickly approaching! Proper hydration is key year-round, but it is especially important during the winter. Make sure that you’re eating foods rich in vitamins and that you are drinking enough fluids each day.

Decrease Your Shower Temperature & Time

Who doesn’t love a long, hot shower? Everyone! However, taking a shorter shower with lukewarm water has been shown to decrease the chances of experiencing dry skin.

Try Gentle, Fragrance-Free Cleansers

Pay attention to what is in your cleansers. This can include hand soap, dish soap, and body wash. Switch to cleansers with ingredients that will not irritate or dry out your skin. If you’re concerned about the products you have, try to switch to products with “fragrance-free” on the label. Reach out to us if you need any suggestions.

Pay Attention To Your Skincare Routine

Modify your skincare routine as needed. If you have questions about products and what you might need to change during the winter months, give us a call! Also, don’t forget to keep your lips moisturized!

Moisturize Frequently

This is something we all should do, but rarely do enough of! During cold and flu season, we all will be washing our hands or using hand sanitizer more frequently. Washing your hands often is important, but so is moisturizing after. Make sure to moisturize your face, hands, and any other areas that experience dryness often.

Don’t Forget Your Sunscreen

Just because it’s cooler out doesn’t mean you can put the sunscreen up until next summer! The sun’s rays can cause damage to your skin in the winter as well.
